Myasthenia Gravis Association
                                                                  of Kansas City
History
The Myasthenia Gravis Association of Kansas City was founded in 1961 by
Reverend William Stackhouse and Mrs. Joan Stackhouse, who was diagnosed
with MG in 1954.  Being mavericks and pioneers of change, the pair sought
the aid of their church patrons and other MG patients to form a local chapter
of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation.

From then until 1993, the MGA was known as the Myasthenia Gravis
Foundation, Greater Kansas City Chapter. The organization was originally
designed as an outpatient clinic that provided physical facilities, personnel,
and other services necessary to assist the clinic's medical staff with research,
diagnosis, and treatment.

At that time, the MGA collaborated with Menorah Medical Center as a
function of the Division of Neurology. The organization eventually
recognized a need for increased services to provide awareness and education
to the general public and to the medical community.

In 1993, the MGA moved its offices and outpatient clinic to Research Medical
Center in a collaborative effort between Research, the MGA, Health
Midwest, and Kansas City Clinical Neurological Associates (KCCNA). At that
time, the purpose and mission of the MGA shifted and began to include
activities and resources designed to provide patient education, support group
meetings, education, and community awareness. Services provided at the MG
outpatient clinic included diagnosis and evaluation, consultation, testing and
education.

In 2002, Dr. Michael Scwartzman, previous director of the MGA's outpatient
clinic, moved his practice to Neurological Consultants of Kansas City, Inc.,
and the MGA established a new collaborative relationship that supported a
continued patient care. Dr. John Sand of KCCNA moved his practice from
offices in the Research Hospital to Lee's Summit, Missouri. In 2003, Research
Medical Center was sold to HCA.

In 2004, the University of Kansas Medical Center was added to the MGA's list
of clinics for both diagnosis and treatment of MG. Patients are seen by Dr.
Richard Barohn and other neurologists who specialize in the treatment of
MG. With the addition of KU Medical Center, the MGA predicted a large
increase in the number of patients seen at clinic. However, the MGA has
exceeded all predictions. We then had four sites for evaluation and treatment
with neurologists who are experts in diagnosing and treating MG.

In January of 2005, the MGA moved its offices from Research Medical Center
to the Research Brookside Campus (formerly Baptist Lutheran Medical
Facilities) at 6700 Troost, Suite 502.

In May 2006, the MGA received a charter to become the Greater Kansas City
Chapter of the Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America, Inc.

In September 2006, Dr. John Sand left KCCNA to enter private practice of
EMG testing.

Currently, the MGA has three outpatient clinics for diagnosis and treatment
of MG - St. Luke's South, St. Luke's Plaza, and KU Medical Center.
